Fish Biologist
As a Fish Biologist, the incumbent performs, but is not limited to, the following duties:
Responsible for various programs, including restoration of striped bass, lake sturgeon, alligator gar, Yazoo darters, and frecklebelly madtoms. Supports recreational fisheries through propagation of native recreational significant fish species, and recovery efforts for the piebald madtom and Pearl darters. Assumes duties and responsibilities of Project Leader in the absence of the hatchery manager. Lead on outreach programs that positively impact the local economy by attracting visitors to Tupelo, MS. Only experience and education obtained by 10/04/2019 will be considered. MINIMUM
Qualifications:
At a minimum, you must meet one of the following requirements to qualify for this position. A) Possess a Bachelor's Degree with a major in a biological science that includes the following course work:
1) at least 6 semester hours in aquatic subjects such as limnology, ichthyology, fishery biology, aquatic botany, aquatic fauna, oceanography, fish culture, or related courses in the field of fishery biology; AND 2) at least 12 semester hours in the animal sciences subjects such as general zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology, genetics, ecology, cellular biology, parasitology, entomology, or research courses in such subjects. In addition to the minimum qualifications described above, you may qualify for this position at the GS-11 grade level if you meet one of the following additional requirements. A) Possess at least one year of full-time specialized experience comparable in difficulty and responsibility to the next lower grade level (comparable to GS-09) in the Federal service. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include:
experience working in warm and cold water fish production; experience acting as a team leader and training others; experience planning, organizing, and conducting administrative functions such as property management, budget and finance, procurement, and safety; and experience in assisting with study design, data collection, and data evaluation; OR B) Have completed three full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or equivalent doctoral degree in a field directly related to fishery biology, such as limnology, ichthyology, fishery biology, aquatic botany, aquatic fauna, oceanography, fish culture, fish and wildlife management, marine science, or other fields directly related to fishery biology. OR C) Possess an equivalent combination of professional experience and graduate level education beyond the second year which together equals 100% of the requirements. ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS, GS-12:
In addition to the minimum qualifications described above, you may qualify for this position at the GS-12 grade level if you meet one of the following additional requirements. A) Possess one year of professional experience equivalent to the GS-11 level in the Federal service; this experience could have been gained in the private and/or public sectors. Examples of qualifying specialized experience may include:
experience in captive rearing warm and cold water recreational fish and listed species; experience supervising and/or training others; experience planning, organizing, and conducting administrative functions such as property management, budget and finance, procurement, and safety; and experience in designing, conducting and maintaining records and publishing scientific studies.

The major duties listed represent the full performance level of GS-11/12. At lower grade levels, you will perform assignments of a more limited scope and with less independence. You will progressively acquire the background necessary to perform at the full performance level of GS-11/12. Promotion is at the discretion of the supervisor and is contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of higher level work, and availability of funds.The selectee may be promoted without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met.
